Kris Conklin, a long-time friend I met at Judson Memorial Church, celebrated and mourned her father\u2019s recent death by describing his sweet, wise nature and sharing this poem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shifting the Sun<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your father dies, say the Irish,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you lose your umbrella against bad weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May his sun be your light, say the Armenians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your father dies, say the Welsh,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you sink a foot deeper into the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May you inherit his light, say the Armenians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your father dies, say the Canadians,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you run out of excuses. May you inherit<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his sun, say the Armenians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your father dies, say the French,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you become your own father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May you stand up in his light, say the Armenians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your father dies, say the Indians,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he comes back as the thunder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May you inherit his light, say the Armenians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your father dies, say the Russians,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he takes your childhood with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May you inherit his light, say the Armenians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your father dies, say the English,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you join his club you vowed you wouldn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May you inherit his sun, say the Armenians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When your father dies, say the Armenians,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

your sun shifts forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you walk in his light.<\/p>\n
